5 World War I Section 4 “Legacy of the War”
Section Objectives: To summarize Wilson’s Fourteen Points To describe the Treaty of Versailles

6 Wilson’s Fourteen Points
President Wilson outlined a plan for peace as the end of the war drew near called the Fourteen Points B. Wilson felt that the fourteenth point was the most important- the developing of a League of Nations: An assembly of all nations should be formed to protect world peace in the future. What do you think is the MOST important point? WHY?

7 A. The peace treaty that officially ended WWI
is the Treaty of Versailles B. European Allies were focused on punishing Germany and the Central Powers for its part in the war 1. Germany stripped of its colonies and most of its military 2. Fined $33 billion in reparations (money that a defeated nation pays for the destruction caused by the war) 3. Divided up the Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empires, creating 7 new countries (p. 697)

8 List 7 new countries Finland, Estonia Latvia, Lithuania Poland
Czechoslovakia Yugoslavia

9 Treaty of Versailles Effects
C. The United States Senate did NOT ratify or pass the Treaty of Versailles or membership into the League of Nations. Belief that the League’s decisions would involve the United States in future foreign commitments or wars. Wilson was devastated and suffered a stroke, he never fully recovered. D. The Treaty planted the seeds of World War II, an even more deadly conflict to come. Germany’s resentment over the REPARATIONS in the Treaty of Versailles eventually leads to the rise of The Nazi Party with Hitler as the leader

10 Why do you think the Treaty of Versailles contributed to a Nazi take-over of Germany?
Hitler was very upset when Germany surrendered in November He firmly believed that Jewish politicians had stabbed Germany in the back. Germans hated the Versailles Treaty and viewed the June 28 as a day of dishonor for the German state. Hitler’s main objective and argument was that he was going to make Germany great again. He argued that for Germany to regain its status of greatness, the Versailles Treaty had to be abolished. Hitler began by proclaiming that he was going to liberate the German people of the dictated treaty. Extract from the Nazi Party Programme 1920: We demand the union of all Germans into a greater Germany. We demand that Germany be treated in the same way as other countries and we demand the annulling of the Treaty of Versailles. We demand land for our growing population.

11 Summarize the 14 points Describe the Versailles Treaty and draw a picture to represent it. TABLE WORK Discuss with your table the importance of the League of Nations What reasons could Germany give for starting a second World War based from the Treaty of Versailles

12 Compare to your map on p.127 What differences do you see?

13 Create a Bubble Map on page 136 Treaty of Versailles: Why did this contribute to WW II?
Forced Germany to accept blame Germany had to pay $33 billion in reparations Treaty of Versailles Created new countries NOT ratified by the US

14 To identify the reasons for the Red Scare
To explain why Racial Tensions increased after the war

15 Strikes and the Red Scare
A. After the war there were many labor strikes in the U.S. These strikes made many Americans fear the possibility of a communist revolution. Federal agents and local police arrested thousands suspected of “radical” activity. B. Called “Red” Scare because: communists were called “reds”

16 . Racial Tensions Increase
A. Soldiers returning from the war and increasing labor strikes caused racial tensions between African Americans and whites who competed for jobs and housing in Northern cities. The Omaha Race Riot occurred in Omaha, Nebraska, on 28-September 29, It followed more than 20 race riots that occurred in major industrial cities of the United States during the Red Summer of (Red for bloodshed)

17 Longing for Normalcy A. Warren G. Harding wins the 1920 presidential election as he promises a break from labor strikes, race riots and a “return to normalcy” What do you think he meant by this? America’s present need is not heroics, but healing; not nostrums but normalcy; not revolution, but restoration.
