1 Bell Work What is a slice?
Think-Pair-Share with your shoulder partner about what a slice is. Provide examples of where you have seen slices before. **Remind Ms. Gibbs to pass out vocab.

2 Slicing Three- Dimensional Figures

3 Vocabulary A plane is a flat surface with no thickness. It extends forever. We often draw a plane with edges, but it really has no edges. A view into the inside of something made by cutting through it.  This is a cross-section of a piece of celery. Cross sections make it easy to draw details of solid objects.

4 Three-Dimensional Figures
A prism three-dimensional figure with at least three rectangular lateral faces and top and bottom face parallel.

5 Three-Dimensional Figures
A pyramid is a three-dimensional figure with at least three lateral faces that are triangles and only one base.

6 Slice Parallel to the Base ║ Slice Perpendicular to the Base ┴

7 Slicing Shapes with Play-Doh
Predict what cross sections you think will happen when cutting parallel to the base AND perpendicular to the base. Mold your play-doh into your assigned shape. Slice your shape parallel ║to the base. Record your results. Repeat steps 2-4 for slicing perpendicular ┴ to the base. Prepare to share your results!

9 Slicing Three-Dimensional Shapes

10 8-2A Nets of 3-D Figures

11 What is a net? Think-Pair-Share with your shoulder partner about what a net is. Provide examples of where you have seen nets before.

12 Vocabulary Nets are two-dimensional patterns of three- dimensional figures. When you construct a net, you are decomposing the three-dimensional figure into separate figures.

13 Net of a Cereal Box

14 Explore What are the shapes that make up the surfaces of the rectangular prism? What do you notice about the top and bottom faces, the left and right faces, and the front and back faces? Explain how you could find the total area of the surfaces of your rectangular prism? Write a formula for the surface area using the terms base, width, and height of the. Use the net to help you. Justify your answer.

15 Net of a Triangular Prism

16 Explore What are the shapes that make up the surfaces of the triangular prism? What do you notice about the top and bottom faces, the lateral sides? Explain how you could find the total area of the surfaces of your triangular prism? Write a formula for the surface area using the terms base, width, and height of the box. Use the net to help you. Justify your answer
