1. The Great Plains

2. Life on the Plains #1 The Great Plains were very flat
There wasn’t a lot of trees but there was a lot of grass
Millions of buffalo grazed the huge area
The Plain people followed a farming and hunting life
Since the land was dry they settled their villages among rivers
Their main crop was corn , beans, squash, and pumpkins
The plain people included the Lakota, Pawnee, Osage, Cheyenne

3. Living on the Plains #2 They built lodges to live in
The people used buffalo for meat, clothing, bowls, and cooking
They travel to hunt the animals in the summer and fall
To hunt the animals they had to be on foot
Women would build teepees for the hunters
People also used poles to transport goods
They made travois which are like sleds
They would have dogs pull them

4. Cheyenne Horses are here today because of the Spanish
Some horses broke free and came to north
The Cheyenne tamed the horses and also got horses by raiding other tribes and by trading
Using the horse changed the way the Cheyenne lived
It made it easier to hunt buffalo Ex: A man sitting on a horse could alone kill a buffalo
Later on the Plains they used guns to hunt with
A horse drawn travois was much faster then a dog
Riders became very skilled at riding the horse

5. The Cheyenne Today
Today about 12,000 Cheyenne live on the Great Plains
Many live in present-day Montana on a reservation
Many Cheyenne follow their traditions today keeping their language and traditions alive
Every Fourth of July a powwow is held in Lame deer, Montana
Visitors can watch them dance and play games

6. Vocabulary Lodges: Large round hut built by plain Indians
Tepees: poles arranged in circle covered by animal hide
Travois: Sled made of poles tied together
Powwow: Native American ceremony that include traditional dances and games
