Why was a new a “law of the land” necessary?

2 Convening the Constructional Convention
Follow along with the reading: Answer the questions: 1. What key figures were not at the Constitutional Convention? 2. Later what did these missing “key figures” call the Convention? Why DO YOU THINK they felt this way? 3. Who is called the “Father of the Constitution?” Why?

3 Reaching a Compromise Follow along in the text and answer the questions 1. Why were windows and doors locked to keep the public out? 2. What does the Virginia plan favor concerning government? What type of Government is that Considered? 3. What is a bicameral legislature? 4. What is a unicameral legislature?

4 Slavery, Commerce and Executive
With your partner: Read the next two sections and answer the following questions (pg 54 and 55) 1. What did many northerners want? What did many southerners want? 2. How does the issue of slavery affect taxes and representation? 3. What is the compromise called with decides how slaves would be “counted?” 4. What is an electoral College? What does it do? 5. What does “adding the two senators to the number of electors from each state…” do? 6. When is the Constitution signed?

ON YOUR OWN! Answer the question: 1. Does the new agreed upon Constitution follow the words of the Preamble? Does it “establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, and provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare…?” DEFEND YOUR ANSWER with how it does or does not.
