Phases of the Moon

New Moon When no moon is visible because the sunlit portion of the moon does not face the earth. (moon is in between the sun and earth)

Full Moon The moon is fully illuminated as seen from earth. (Order: sun, earth, moon)

Crescent Moon The moon appears to be less than half illuminated.

Gibbous Moon The moon appears to be more than half illuminated.

Waxing The sunlit part of the moon is getting larger. * light on the right = waxing

Waning The sunlit part of the moon is getting smaller.

Quarter Moon One fourth of the moon’s revolution around the earth. (The moon is half lit)

Lunar Cycle The interval of time when the moon goes through a full revolution around the earth (one full cycle = approximately 28 days)
