4. Af. Am. Move North
Many blacks moved to the north in search of better lives and the desire for economic opportunities.
Harsh life in the south was pushing many African Americans to leave.

5. Effect of the Great Migration
A key result of the great migration was the rapid growth of many northern cities.
Black Americans moved in record numbers to industrial cities in the North
The movement of people influenced northern culture mainly through the introduction of blues to the North

6. Racial Tensions Rise
When the war ended, demand for war products fell and many workers lost their job.
American soldiers returned home to find themselves in competition with African Americans for jobs.
At the same time, African Americans expectations had changed by believing they had earned greater freedom after helping fight in the war.

7. Violence Breaks Out
In the south, some whites began to punish anyone who encouraged black people to move north or otherwise assert their independence.
Some other places made laws that made it illegal to sell or distribute black publications.

8. Black Nationalism
Marcus Garvey is the founder of the black nationalism movement.
This was a direct contrast to the beliefs of Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. DuBois and the NAACP.
In 1914, Garvey founded an organization known as the Universal Negro Improvement Association, UNIA.

9. UNIA
Main goal was to encourage African from around the world to return to Africa and build a new nation there.
Garvey sought to build an independent black economy in the U.S. by founding businesses.
He also believed that blacks should take pride in their African heritage

10. In 1922, Garvey and other members of UNIA were indicted for mail fraud.
Upon his release from prison, Garvey was deported back to Jamaica and then later moved to London where he died.

11. Labor Unions
A. Philip Randolph founded the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters.
This was the first truly successful black labor union.

12. Victory against lynching
In 1922, the House passed the Dyer Anti-Lynching Bill
This bill made lynching a felony and require punishment both for those involved in a lynch mob and for those who failed to punish mob members.
