NERVOUS SYSTEM I PP
4
FUNCTION Network of neurons that communicate and control the body through electrical impulses Includes neurons, brain and spinal cord
5
NEURON An electrically excitable cell that transmits and processes messages through electrical signals.
6
NEURONS Cell Body: houses most organelles
Axons: extension of cell body Axon terminal: end of the axon Dendrites: receive messages from other neurons Direction of impulse
7
NEURONS Myelin sheath: lipid layer around axon (insulator= increased rate)
8
NEURONS Dendrites: receive messages from other neurons
Synapse: gap between neurons
10
What do you see?
11
TYPES OF NEURONS Sensory (5 types) – carry information from the senses back to the brain Motor – brings message from CNS to muscles/glands. Interneurons – connect sensory and motor and carry impulses between them.
12
Sensory Receptors ( 5 types)
Neuron that detects stimuli.
13
Mechanoreceptors Detect pressure and movement Sense: Hearing and touch
14
Thermoreceptor Detect temperature
15
Pain receptor Detect tissue damage
16
Chemoreceptors Detects chemicals Sense: Smell and taste
17
Are the lines straight or crooked?
18
Photoreceptor Respond to variation in light Sense: sight
19
Assignment Nervous System Microslides
