Bell Ringer The two things that affect ocean water density are ____________ and ____________. Don’t forget you have a vocab quiz on Friday
2
Waves & Tides
3
Waves Wave – rhythmic (regularly occurring) movement that carries energy through space or matter (here, we’re talking specifically about water) Created by wind blowing over the water’s surface
4
Waves As a wave passes, water bobs up and down in a circular pattern
Only the energy moves forward, not the water The water just moves in circles
5
Waves As the water becomes shallow near the shore, the wave bottom scrapes along the sand The bottom of the wave slows down while the top continues on
6
Waves This causes the wave to topple over itself (break)
7
Parts of a Wave Crest – highest point of a wave
Trough – lowest point of a wave
8
Parts of a Wave Wave Height – vertical distance between the crest and trough Determined by wind speed, wind duration (how long it is blowing), and fetch (how much water is being blown)
9
Parts of a Wave Wave length – the distance between two identical parts (crest crest OR trough trough)
10
Parts of a Wave Wave speed – the amount of time it takes two crests or troughs to pass the same point
11
Label the Parts of the Wave
12
Tides Tides – the periodic (happens regularly) rise and fall of sea level Highest sea level – high tide Lowest sea level – low tide The daily cycle of tides is 24 hours and 50 minutes
13
Tides The difference between high and low tides varies around the world NC ~ 3ft Bay of Fundy, Canada ~45ft High Tide Low Tide
14
Tides Tides are caused by the gravity of the Moon and Sun pulling on the Earth The Moon is closer to the Earth, so it affects our tides twice as much as the Sun
15
Tides Lunar tides – tides caused by the Moon (daily high and low tides)
16
Tides Solar tides – tides caused by the Sun
Solar tides either add to or lessen the effects of the lunar tides
17
Solar Tides Spring Tides – occur when Sun and Moon line up together
Increased “pull” on the water creates a big difference between the tides High tides are higher than normal Low tides are lower than normal
18
Solar Tides Neap Tides – occur when the Sun and Moon are at right angles to each other Water is being pulled in two directions, so small difference between the tides High tides are lower than normal Low tides are higher than normal
19
Solar Tides Normal high & low tides spring tides neap tides
High tide line High tide line High tide line Low tide line Low tide line Low tide line
20
Solar Tides Solar tides alternate nearly every week

Other Waves Draw something that is wavy (ex: roller coaster, wavy hair, etc.) THAT IS NOT AN OCEAN WAVE. This picture needs to be detailed. If you draw wavy hair, you can’t just draw one wavy brown line. I need to see a head, face, other hair, etc. Title: ____ Wave (Ex: Roller Coaster Wave) Label and define the parts of your wave: crest, trough, wave height, wave length (main part of your grade!!!!) Turn in when done and get the Tides BYOD activity and complete
