1 Standard: DA-1: The student will understand and utilize the mathematical processes of problem solving, reasoning and proof, communication, connections, and representation. Objective: TSWBAT classify descriptive statistics and inferential statistics.

2 Chapter One The Nature of Probability and Statistics
Definition: Statistics is the science of conducting studies to collect, organize, summarize, analyze, and draw conclusions from data.

3 Two key words : sample population
A population is the total set of individuals, groups, objects, or events that the researcher is studying. Ex: All students in MCHS A sample is a group of some subjects selected from a population. Ex: Ten students of all students in MCHS

4 Descriptive Statistics
It consists of a collection, organization, summarization, and presentation of data. Example: US Census Bureau collects data, organizes about the age, gender, income and then summarize the data, and then present the data in the form of charts, graphs or tables.

5 Inferential Statistics
It tries to make the inferences from samples to populations. This uses probability. Example: Cigarette smoking causes lung cancer.

6 Main Difference Descriptive statistics can’t be used to make generalizations for larger groups. Inferential statistics are used to draw conclusions and make predictions based on the analysis of sample.

7 Descriptive Inferential
In the year 2008 the average age of MCHS student was 15 years 7 months The national average medical expense per person is $1052 Nine out of ten on-the-job fatalities are men. An apple in a day keeps the doctor away. Drinking decaffeinated coffee can raise cholesterol levels Experts say that mortgage rates may soon hit top.

8 Classify Descriptive (or) Inferential
1. In our school the number of female students is 726 2. When you toss a coin 10 times then heads may happen five times. 3. The average income of a person in Marlboro County is $78 per day. 4. If you drink milk everyday your bones become very strong.

9 POP QUIZ 1 1. What is a population? Give two examples.
2. What is a sample? Give two examples. 3. What is meant by a good sample? Give an example. 4. Give two examples for each of descriptive statistics and inferential statistics? 5. Write down at least five different words from your vocabulary list, related to the objective today.
