Do Now Turn in your Monthly News Projects to the bin.
Make sure you have your calculator. Complete the following problems on your Daily Organizer: What is the speed when Jordan travels 240 miles in 3 hours. What is the distance when Angela bikes at a speed of 2 m/s for 600 seconds? What is the time it takes Drelyn to go 100 m if he’s traveling 5 m/s?

6
Back in Time to 2009 Randy Moss was running towards the end zone, trying to catch a touchdown. His team started at the 50 yard line.
7
He ran and ran… Until he got to the 25 yard line. It took him 5 seconds.
8
But then… He sprained his ankle!
9
However, he’s a team player..
… and he kept running towards the end zone.
10
But… This time, he was much slower.
He caught the ball and ran towards the end zone, but it took him 10 seconds.
11
Unfortunately, Because he was so slow, the other team tackled him before he could score a touch down – right on the side of the 0 yard line.
12
And it didn’t work out too well for Randy.
13
Question: What is the total distance Randy ran? The total time?
What was his speed? Time (in seconds) Position (in yards) 50 5 25 15
14
Another Question: Was his speed 3.33 yards/second during his entire run from the 50 yard line to the end zone? Was there any time that he was going faster or slower? Time (in seconds) Position (in yards) 50 5 25 15
15
One More Question: What was his speed when he ran from the 50 yard line to the 25 yard line? Time (in seconds) Position (in yards) 50 5 25 15
16
Last Question: What is the difference between the different speeds?
Time (in seconds) Position (in yards) 50 5 25 15
17
Average Speed The overall speed from travel that depends on:
Total amount of distance AND Total amount of time Even if the object is moving sometimes faster, sometimes slower, what is the overall speed that it is going at?
18
Instantaneous Speed How fast an object is moving RIGHT NOW – in this INSTANT Current distance/current time
19
Constant Speed The speed doesn’t change the entire trip
The speed at any given point is exactly the same as the average speed
20
Some Guy Dan
21
Is running a 10K race! 10K = 10 kilometers = 10,000 meters
22
He starts out okay… And runs the first 2 kilometers in 10 minutes.
23
Total Distance (meters)
Remember 1 kilometer = 1000 meters Dan ran 2000 meters in 10 minutes Total Time (minutes) Total Distance (meters) 10 2000
24
And then he starts to slow down…
And in the next 10 minutes, he only runs 1 kilometer
25
Total Distance (meters)
1 kilometer = 1000 meters Add 10 minutes onto the time Dan’s already spent running Total Time (minutes) Total Distance (meters) 10 2000 20 3000
26
Because he doesn’t want to end up like this:
27
Dan drinks some of this:
MAGIC POTION OF POWER
28
And it starts to work. Dan runs 3 KILOMETERS in the next 10 minutes!!
29
Total Distance (meters)
3 kilometer = 3000 meters – added on to what he’s already run! Add 10 minutes onto the time Dan’s already spent running Total Time (minutes) Total Distance (meters) 10 2000 20 3000 30 6000
30
BUT THEN… The MAGIC POTION OF POWER really starts to work…
… and DAN THE MAN runs 4 kilometers in the next 10 minutes!!!!
31
DAN WINS THE RACE!!!
32
Total Distance (meters)
Discussion Questions What was Dan’s average speed? When was Dan’s instantaneous speed the slowest? When was Dan’s instantaneous speed the fastest? Total Time (minutes) Total Distance (meters) 10 2000 20 3000 30 6000 40 10000

5 min Do Now Important Dates 15 min Average vs. Instantaneous Speed 35 min Speed Lab
34
Speed Lab You have 3 minutes to complete the pre-lab questions. We will then go outside to complete the lab. After the lab, you’ll complete the calculation and analysis questions.
35
Work Time If you finish your lab early, work on the homework provided to you today that is due on Wednesday.
