2 Jamestown Location- Virginia; built on a peninsula Date- 1607
Founders- Virginia Company; John Smith emerged as their leader People- 100+settlers Reasons for Colonization- find gold & establish trade in fish & furs Government- House of Burgesses-- the first representative government

3 Problems encountered-
Swampy land was a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes & disease Lacked good farmland Hardships: many weren’t willing to work, hunger, winter of was ‘starving time’ Strict rules, need for government Conflict with Native Americans

4 Solutions Grew tobacco/using the swampy land
Private ownership of farmland/worked hard to grow crops for profit House of Burgesses/make laws for colony Marriage of John Rolfe to Pocahontas

5 Plymouth Location- Cape Cod, Massachusetts Date- 1620
Founders- William Bradford People- Separatists who wanted to separate from the Church of England and common people; they would become known as Pilgrims Reasons for Colonization- Religious freedom for the Separatist Government-Believed in the principles of self-government established by the Mayflower Compact

6 Problems Encountered-
Lacked established laws-(Outside of the Virginia Company Colony) Harsh winter weather Lack of food, malnutrition and disease

7 Solutions Wrote Mayflower Compact/social contract to keep colony together Native Americans taught the Pilgrims to live off the land Ship builders/ fishing Traded with Natives
