Founders- Virginia Company; John Smith emerged as their leader People- 100+settlers Reasons for Colonization- find gold & establish trade in fish & furs Government- House of Burgesses-- the first representative government

Problems encountered-
Swampy land was a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes & disease Lacked good farmland Hardships: many weren’t willing to work, hunger, winter of was ‘starving time’ Strict rules, need for government Conflict with Native Americans

Founders- William Bradford People- Separatists who wanted to separate from the Church of England and common people; they would become known as Pilgrims Reasons for Colonization- Religious freedom for the Separatist Government-Believed in the principles of self-government established by the Mayflower Compact
