These machines must only be operated when a qualified Technical Teacher or Technician is in the room. All operators must comply with the control measures identified below.

Operator
These machines must only be operated by suitably qualified staff who have been assessed and authorised by the authority to carry out these operations. The only exception to this rule will be staff undergoing instruction under supervision by an authorised person.
Suitable regulation push sticks should be kept by the machine and used appropriately.
The blade must be guarded so as to expose as little as is practically possible to allow the work to be done.
Observe safe finger distance as marked out on band saw table and do not force work against the blade.
Pupils will be permitted to use the band saw at the teacher’s discretion and only under one-on-one supervision.

Suitable eye protection must be worn by operator.
Exposure to dust and injury due to slipping on dust
The dust extractor must be used. The only exception to this rule is where metal or plastic are being cut, to avoid explosion within the extractor.
The machine should be swept down after use with the power off.
The floor around the machine must be kept clear of dust and other obstructions.

Fright from band braking
When in use, the blade should suit the task it is being used for and be at the proper tension with guides and thrust bearings properly set.
Work should not be forced against the blade.
Blades must be sharp and free from distortion. Frequent examination of the blade should take place.
Technician
The machine should only be used for work which can be conveniently handled.
