Solving Equations Review
Thursday, September 4th, 2014 Solving Equations Review
2
Standard Two-Step Equation
2x + 7 = **only one variable Steps: 1. Get rid of what is on the same side as the variable, but NOT connected to it. (Use opposite operations.) 2. Get rid of what is connected to the variable. (Use opposite operations.)
3
Linear Equations with Variables on Both Sides
3x – 6 = 2x – 2 Steps: 1. Decide which side to collect your variables on. (Usually the side with the largest coefficient.) 2. Refer to steps for the “Two-Step Equation”
4
Equations with Brackets
5(x – 2) = 4x – 3 Steps: 1. Use the distributive property. (Expand brackets) 2. Simplify. (Collect like terms) 3. Refer to steps for the “Two-Step Equation”.
5
Equations with Fractions
𝑥 𝑥+1 5 =8 Steps: 1. Multiply the entire equation by what would be the common denominator. 2. Use the distributive property if necessary. 3. Collect like terms. 4. Refer to steps for the “Two-Step Equation”.
6
Practice 6x – 8 = 4x (y – 1) = 4(y + 4) 𝑥 5 = = 5m – 2
