Physical & Chemical Changes
2
Physical Properties: Properties of matter that can be
measured or observed without changing what the substance is. Examples: Density, Color, Texture, Melting point, boiling point, Luster, Malleability, Ductility
3
Physical Changes Physical Change: when an object changes a physical property of matter without any change in chemical properties A change in size, shape, texture, or state. The object still is the same thing.
4
Examples of Physical Changes
Ripped Paper Boiling Water Cutting Hair Broken Brick
5
Chemical Properties: properties that describe the
ability of a substance to undergo a specific chemical change Examples: Reactivity, Flammability, Combustion, Oxidation
6
Chemical Changes Chemical Change : matter changes into an entirely new substance with different properties …Something new is created.
7
Keys to Identifying a Chemical Change
Color change Temperature change Formation of a gas, bubbles, or odor. Formation of a precipitate.
8
Examples of Chemical Changes
Fireworks exploding An apple rotting Baked cookies
