Directions: On your post-it, answer the following questions. When prompted, find your colleague that has the same colored note and discuss your responses. Regarding writing, 1.) Why is it difficult for students? 2.) What do my students struggle with the most? 3.) Richard Peck, a famous novelist, once said, “Nobody but a reader ever became a writer.” What are your thoughts?

5 Elements of the Standard
Introduce a topic; organize complex ideas, concepts, and information to make important connections and distinctions; include formatting (e.g., headings), graphics (e.g., figures, tables), and multimedia when useful to aiding comprehension. b. Develop the topic with well-chosen, relevant, and sufficient facts, extended definitions, concrete details, quotations, or other information and examples appropriate to the audience’s knowledge of the topic. c. Use appropriate and varied transitions to link the major sections of the text, create cohesion, and clarify the relationships among complex ideas and concepts. d. Use precise language and domain-specific vocabulary to manage the complexity of the topic. e. Establish and maintain an appropriate style and objective tone. f. Provide a concluding statement or section that follows from and supports the information or explanation presented (e.g., articulating implications or the significance of the topic).

Standard: ELACC9-10W2. Write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey complex ideas, concepts, and information clearly and accurately through the effective selection, organization, and analysis of content. You will write an informational essay in your own words explaining some ways in which libraries are adapting and changing in the 21st century. Before you begin planning and writing, you will read two texts. These are the titles of the texts you will read: 1. A New Twist on Libraries 2. Take One, Return One As you read the texts, think about what details from the texts you might use in your informational essay. Go to chart paper

Now write your informational essay. Be sure to: • Use information from the two texts so that your essay includes important details. • Introduce the topic clearly, provide a focus, and organize information in a way that makes sense. • Develop the topic with facts, definitions, details, quotations, or other information and examples related to the topic. • Use appropriate and varied transitions to create cohesion. • Clarify the relationship among ideas and concepts. • Use clear language and vocabulary to inform about the topic. • Provide a conclusion that follows the information presented. • Check your work for correct grammar, usage, capitalization, spelling, and punctuation.
