Warm Up Objective: Scientists will describe the bone types by comparing and contrasting the bones. 1. What is the topic? Bone types 2. What will you be doing? Comparing and contrasting bones 3. Why is this important? Understand more about our body, future career 4. How will you know if you have done well? Able to describe the bone types, completed work

Bone What is bone?
4
Bone What is bone? Made of osseous tissue
Major structural and supportive connective tissue Forms rigid part of bones that make up skeleton Mostly made of collagen and calcium Living, growing tissue
5
Types of Bones Name of Bone Type (yellow)
Description of bone structure (blue) Location of Bones (pink) Functions of Bones (green) Sketch an example (white) Flat Bones Long Bones Irregular Bones Sesamoid Bones Short Bones
6
Flat Bones Thin, roughly parallel surfaces
Roof of the skull, sternum, ribs, scapulae Provide protection for the underlying soft tissues and offer extensive surface area for the attachment of skeletal muscles
7
Long Bones Relatively long and slender
Arm, forearm, thigh, leg, palms, soles, fingers, toes Support body weight and facilitate movement
8
Irregular Bones Complex shapes with short, flat, notched, or ridged surfaces Spinal vertebrae, bones of the pelvis, several skull bones Protection of tissue and providing muscle attachment points
9
Sesamoid Bones Small, flat, and shaped somewhat like a sesame seed
Near the joints of the knees, hands, and feet. Individual people vary in the location and abundance of these. Modify pressure, reduce friction, occasionally alter the direction of muscle pull
10
Short bones Small and boxy Bones in the wrists
Provide support and stability with little to no movement
