3 Subjects and Verbs In English, sentences have a subject and a verb. The subject is the person or thing that is doing the action or that is being described. The verb is the action word, like jump or sing. The verb can also be a linking word, like is or are, that links the subject to a description. In French, sentences also have a subject and a verb.

4 Nouns and Pronouns Sentences with nouns as subjects Sentences with pronouns as subjects Denise sings well. Denise chante bien. Simon is blond. Simon est blond. Denise is a friend. Denise est une amie. She sings well. Elle chante bien. He is blond. Il est blond. She is fifteen years old. Elle a quinze ans.
