1 Do Now When the bell rings After the bell (2 min) In your seat:
With pen/pencil With Notebook With Handout Packet from last class on your desk Silent and ready for Do Now Answer the following: A horse is on a 24 foot chain and wants an apple that is 26 feet away. How can the horse get to the apple? A: The chain is not attached to anything. Still needs Do Now

2 Agenda  Do Now (5 min) Warm Up/Demo (10 min)
Notes: Introduction to reactions (30 min) Lab (30 min) Independent Practice (10 min) Exit Slip (5 min) Closeout (2 min)

3 Introduction to Chemical Reactions
Objectives: Understand that all chemical reactions undergo chemical changes Understand the difference between chemical and physical changes Identify and explain examples of physical and chemical changes

4 Guiding Question What is fire?

5 Demo: What causes the candle to be extinguished?

6 Vocabulary and Abbreviations
Physical change: a change in the state, phase, or appearance of a material without forming new materials. Chemical change: also called a chemical reaction; the process of substances being chemically changed into other substances through the reorganization of atoms. Reactant: the starting materials in a chemical reaction that are transformed into products during chemical reactions. Product: the substances formed from reactants as a result of a chemical reaction. Precipitate: an insoluble substance formed during a chemical change.

7 Physical Properties Changes used to describe how something is:
Color Shape Size Density Melting/Boiling Point Odor matter changes form but not composition (i.e. ice is still H2o) Phase change Shape change Size change Dissolving No color change (except dye)

8 Chemical Properties Changes
describes how a substance reacts with something else Combustibility (explode) Flammability (Burn) Ability to rust/tarnish Reacts with base to make water pure substances mix and change into something else Color change (Tarnish/Rust) Gas produced (Fizzing) Energy change (hot/cold or light) Precipitate forms Example: H2 + O2  H2O Called reactions

9 Types of Reactions Chemical Nuclear Involve the nucleus of atoms only
Elements change Produce massive amounts of energy Mass is converted into energy Video Involve electrons only Bonds are broken and/or formed Limited energy output Mass and energy remain the same Consider the following

10 Chemical Reactions Reactants  Products
Elements do not change, only the organization changes

11 Lab: Physical/Chemical Changes
How What C – Level 2, in group only H – Group raises hand A – Observing physical and chemical changes M – In group, 3 Total hall passes P – In lab area, following procedure and safety rules, wearing goggles, writing observations in data chart You must wear safety goggles at # 2, 3, 5 Follow all safety protocols Your lab station must look exactly as you found it before leaving 5 minutes per station Color coded

12 Make 2 Frayer Models Independent Practice Physical change
Chemical change

13 Exit Slip What? (5 min) How?
C – No talking H – Raise hand A – Taking exit slip M – In seat P – Completing exit slip without notes and turning in If you finish early, summarize what you learned at the bottom of your notes OR answer today’s guiding question

14 Forgetting to stretch is a bear.
Closing What are 3 key takeaways from today and yesterday? Honor’s: Brainstorm your science fair topic
