Why do we classify things?

Back in the day… Aristotle grouped everything into simple groups such as animals or plants.

Along came Carl! Carl Linnaeus came up with a naming system: binomial nomenclature bi = two nomen = name Organisms were given a scientific name that included genus and species.

Rules to writing scientific names
Homo sapiens An organism’s genus is always written first; the organism’s species is always written second The genus is Capitalized; the species is written in lower case Scientific names of organisms are always italicized or underlined, examples: Homo sapiens Homo sapiens
