Do NOW: On a T-chart, list the characteristics of a teacher who adds NO academic value to a student (TVAAS 1) on one side. On the other side, list the characteristics of a teacher who adds MORE than the expected academic value to a student’s life (TVAAS 5). TVAAS 1 TVAAS 5

What we saw: Teachers not using the lesson plan format
Teachers who turned in lesson plans, but were not using them Teachers not following progressive discipline Teachers on the cell phone and/or distracted while students were present Teachers not prepared at all Teachers doing ALL of the talking and writing Tasks not aligned to standard (or each other)

What we saw: Teachers with misspelled words and bad grammar WRITTEN on the board No lesson labels (or they don’t match what’s happening) NASTY CLASSROOMS Teachers with no “teacher sense” Students socializing in lieu of working Teachers not asking the question BEFORE calling on a student (not practicing good questioning techniques in general) Teachers not differentiating assignments

What we saw: Teachers who don’t know their students
Students dismissing themselves when the bell sounds Classrooms without systems (for anything) OR the systems are not being reinforced Teachers answering their own questions

General Expectations Follow the steps of progressive discipline with fidelity (don’t be inconsistent…don’t go rogue) Use the lesson plan format (CONSISTENTLY!) When you receive the same feedback TWICE, you should be asking questions about how to correct Create systems for your classroom and follow them Learn all of your students (special assignment) Attend PD AND incorporate the tips in your lessons/class Attend ALL Parent/Teacher conferences scheduled for students you teach

Not to behave like a “1”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Drop-ins (informal) everyday with specific feedback A weekly meeting with your administrator to receive specific lesson plan feedback and support for best practice use Modeled lessons Collaboration during PLC’s on Mondays Differentiated Professional Development

Special Assignment: By October 1, you should know ALL of the following about EVERY student you teach: The student’s name With whom the student lives Something the student does well At least one reason why the student struggles
