3 Railroad During the late 1800s and early 1900s Texas’ economy was determined by __________________________________________ To combat corruption and return power to the general population Texans called for reform. The reform Texas wanted started with the railroad. The railroads were good and bad because the railroad could determine how much the cost was to transport goods from one area to another. 4 James Hogg Hogg was a lawyer who became attorney general and led the fight for reform of large corporations. Forced many insurance companies to stop working in Texas. His next goal was to break up the railroad trust, group of companies setting prices Hogg created the railroad commission, who oversee all railroad operations

5 Populism Political movement of the common people that resulted in the formation of the People’s party Supported by farmers and ranchers, those not helped by urbanization and railroad hikes. Relied on newspapers religious groups and speakers to promote their political view. Want government regulation of business, public ownership of railroads, and farmers store excess crops until prices raise.
