3. GA Supreme Court
How they are selected: 6 judges and one chief justice elected to six year terms
# of courts: 1 court
Jurisdiction: Appellate court
Responsibilities: reviews civil and criminal cases made in the court of appeals and lower courts, handles death sentences, determines if laws are constitutional

5. Welcome to Yancey’s court
We will come up with a court case and go through the many levels of court
We will start with a small issue but eventually becomes a big one
Follow the step by step process to get through the justice system

6. The Process
The adult justice system looks very close to the juvenile justice one
Going in depth we will look at the steps that happen in the Pretrial and what happens in the Trial phase
When something comes on the board I need you to get it down while the case is being tried

7. The Actors
Plaintiff/Prosecutor - The person who brings a case in front of a court
Defendant/Suspect - The person being sued or accused in a crime
Jury – A group of people who have sworn to give a verdict in a case
Defense attorney – Lawyer assigned to defend the suspect
Bailiff – person who performs legal action in the courtroom

9. Pretrial Process Arrest
Booking – Cops make an arrest report and put suspect in jail
Initial Appearance – Suspect appears before Magistrate court
Preliminary Hearing – Magistrate Judge figures out whether there was probable cause
Grand Jury Indictment – a group of citizens see if they are guilty
Assignment before Superior Court – The suspect is questioned and brought before a judge
Admitting guilt/Plea bargaining – If Suspects says not guilty then it will go to trial if they plead guilty then Judge rules

Closing statements – after both sides present their evidence final arguments are made
Jury Deliberation and Verdict
Sentencing – Judge decides what the ruling for a case should be
Appeal – If defendant maintains innocence then they can try to appeal if new evidence is introduced
Select a Jury – 12 members are selected to rule on a case
Opening Statements – both attorneys are allowed to talk to the jury
Presentation of evidence – Witnesses are called and evidence is introduced to make a case

12. Two party system
The two parties have been Republican and Democrat since the 1860s
The parties allow for like minded people who share common beliefs and thoughts to work together
Sometimes a third party affects elections causing runoffs when normally there wouldn’t be one
