3 Early Fighting in Europe and the Mediterranean
By the Pearl Harbor attack, the Axis Powers had controlled much of Europe and the lands around the Mediterranean. Bulgaria, Hungary, and Romania had joined the Axis Powers. The Germans had nearly cut off all British supply lines . Early 1942 saw Germany sink 500 ships off the U.S. East Coast.

4 North Africa The Italians invaded North Africa in 1940.
Hitler sent the Desert Fox, Erwin Rommel, who pushed all the way to Egypt in 1942. Although admittedly a good general, Rommel was hurting for men and supplies. The British took advantage with a victory at the Battle of El Alamein, which helped turn the corner for the Allies in N. Africa.

5 Stalingrad Germany had pushed the Soviets almost to Moscow and had laid siege to Leningrad. Pushing toward the important city of Stalingrad in 1942 the Germans faced a long resistance and a brutal winter. Axis troops surrendered in late Jan.1943. The German forces suffered some 200,000 casualties. Prime minister Churchill took note: “Before Alamein we never had a victory. After Alamein we never had a defeat.”
