QUOTE OF THE DAY “YOU CAN LEARN SOMETHING NEW IF YOU LISTEN.” ~UNKNOWN
5
What is Matter Matter is everything that takes up space.
Example, book, table, you, etc. Name the three states of matter: Solid, liquid and gas.
6
Review Definition on states of matter
Solid: A solid keeps its own shape Liquid: A liquid takes the shape of it’s container Gas: Does not have a fixed shape or volume
8
At boiling point the liquid turns to a gas
9
Light Review
10
Waves The motion of a disturbance between two points
For example, dropping a small object such as a pebble into a pond causes ripples of water to spread outward from where the object lands. The pebble disturbs the water immediately surrounding it, which disturbs the water further out.
11
REVIEW TWO TYPES OF WAVES TRANSVERSE WAVE LONGITUDINAL WAVE
12
Transverse Wave Made up of oscillations that are perpendicular to the direction that the wave travels Example, Light.
13
The oscillations are parallel to the direction that the wave travels.
Longitudinal Wave The oscillations are parallel to the direction that the wave travels. Example, Sound.
14
Regardless of the wave classification all waves are caused by a vibration of some kind.
Example, sound waves originate from vibrations matter, such as a person’s vocal chords.
15
NOTE: waves transport energy but not mass.
16
Review of a wave
17
Electromagnetic Waves
Waves made up of electric and magnetic field that oscillate as the wave travels. Both are always directed perpendicular to one another.
18
More over…. Eletromagnetic waves are caused by the initial vibration of charge particles. For example, electrons and protons.
