1 Overview of Greek Mythology
Goal: to familiarize yourself with some important characters and names in Greek Mythology in order to aid in your understanding of the Odyssey.

2 Your Mythology IQ – 5 min. how many of these names can you identify

3 NOTE down the following for each mythological figure:
Write down the name of the god or goddess. Write down what they are in control of, or for what they are known. Create a symbol that represents the god or goddess.

4 Zeus -King of the gods -Married to Hera, but had a ton of affairs (often with mortal women he found to be beautiful) -Controlled lightning, and is often depicted sitting on a throne on Mt. Olympus

5 -Goddess-queen of the sea, and wife of Poseidon
Amphitrite -Goddess-queen of the sea, and wife of Poseidon -The female personification of the sea

6 Apollo -The god of music, healing, light, and truth, also responsible for giving the science of medicine to man

7 Poseidon -The god of the sea, earthquakes, floods, drought and horses
-Usually depicted holding a trident (a three-pronged fisherman's spear)

8 Ares -The god of war, and son of Zeus and Hera
-Represented the raw violence and untamed acts that occurred in wartime

9 Aphrodite -Goddess of love, desire, and beauty -Had a magical belt (girdle) that forced everyone who saw her to fall in love with her

10 Artemis -The goddess of hunting, the wilderness and wild animals, and childbirth -In ancient art Artemis was usually depicted as a girl or young maiden with a hunting bow and quiver of arrows.

11 Hermes -The messenger of the Olympic gods
-As time went on, he was also associated with luck, shepherds, athletes, thieves, and merchants

12 Athena -She protected cities, and was the goddess of war strategy, handicraft, and practical reason -Born from Zeus’ forehead fully grown and wearing armor

13 -God of blacksmiths, sculptors, metal working, fire and volcanoes
Hephaestus -God of blacksmiths, sculptors, metal working, fire and volcanoes -Considered super ugly -Married to Aphrodite

14 -A Titan, and the personification of the Sun
Helios -A Titan, and the personification of the Sun

15 Persephone -Kidnapped by Hades, she became the Queen of the Underworld -The ancient Greeks used this story to explain the change of the seasons, the eternal cycle of the Nature's death and rebirth

16 Sirens -half bird and half woman
-lured sailors to their doom with sweet singing

17 The muses -Greek goddesses who ruled over the arts and sciences and offered inspiration in those subjects
