2 Harmony Refers to how the garment achieves equilibrium through the use of lines, shapes, colors, textures and patterns. A Harmonious garment will achieve two things. Enough variety to avoid boredom, but not so much variety as to create conflict. Unify the garment in a way that brings all the elements together effectively.

3 Both can be overdone, the key is to balance both to achieve HARMONY
UNITY (Things that are alike) – a sense of completeness, when nothing is missing, left out or undone This Design achieves Unity by: the use of Repetition of Blues in the hat, buttons, & pants. Repetition of browns in belt & shoes. Whites in & jacket Both can be overdone, the key is to balance both to achieve HARMONY

4 Harmony VARIETY (Things that are different) – when the design has differences to create interest This garment achieves Variety, with the focal point at the neck. Interesting belt. Shiny texture in shirt, compared to the rough denim texture. High heeled shoes.

5 How is harmony achieved?
Unity – Gray/Silver throughout, fitted, repeating lines Variety – Shift in Texture Fur Collar. Tulle Underskirt. Shiny texture throughout the dress.

Unity: repetition of red and black Variety: texture below the skirt, flower above

7 How is harmony achieved?
Unity: Repetition of color in leggings and bodice. Repetition of trim on straps and in hair. Variety: Interesting trim application. Focal point in center.

8 How is harmony achieved?
Unity – Black throughout the garment, in the shoes, & tights. Variety – Feather sleeves & yoke at neck.

9 How is harmony achieved?
Unity: neutral colors, vertical lines, brown repeated in shoes Variety: belt-horizontal line

10 Harmony assignment Choose one magazine picture of a GOOD design.

Proportion Assignment Choose a picture of a full length design. Cut it out nicely and paste them to a white piece of paper Using a ruler decide what the proportion of the outfit is. Draw your box and lines on top of the design, using a pen that can be seen. Label with numbers the divisions Paragraph: What is the ratio? How does the proportion add interest, help the figure or detract from the figure?
