1
An Introduction to Pointillism
Drawing and Painting
2
What is Pointillism? Creating a picture using only dots, no lines
Often used in painting Also used in drawing
3
Pointillism Its practitioners believed that separate, distinct application of pigment would produce better color vibrancy than simply blending it in together AKA: if you don’t blend colors, they are brighter as individual dots
4
How did pointillism evolve?
First used in the 1880s by neo-impressionist painters It was not taken seriously by the art community until much later
5
Pointillism The idea behind the modern art/ contemporary art movement of pointillism was to paint in minuscule dots. The effect was a painting that looked dream like and fairytale like. In the 19th century we see artists begin to use pointillism with other art mediums such as pencil and ink
9
When you do this with color, you begin to see how each individual color works together to make an image
10
What you will be doing You are going to do a little bit of research on pointillism and neo-impressionism You will create 3 small pointillism pieces, each using a different medium (pencil, ink, paint) You will start with pencil! You will do the ink with a fine point black sharpie Before you use the paint, we (the class) will do some work with using the color spectrum
