Food Unit Intro Food = Calories Calories = Energy Warm-Up 5/4/15 On a separate sheet of paper, write your name and label 1-14: 1) Calculate your weight in kilograms (1 kilogram = ~2 pounds) 2) Multiply your weight in kg by 10. This is the approximate amount of force you exert on the ground in Newtons.

7 Calculating Calorie Use
3) Measure the height of one step in centimeters and count how many steps there are in one flight of stairs (3rd to 4th floors). Multiply the two numbers. 4) How would you change the answer from #3 to get the height of a flight of stairs in meters? Write down the height in meters.

8 Energy (Calorie) Activity
5) Multiply your answers from #2 and #4 together to calculate the amount of energy, in joules, that you need to use to climb a flight of stairs. 6) Using #5, approximately how many Calories would this burn? (1 Calorie = 4184 joules)

9 Step Up 7) You will be timing each other for the time it takes to climb one flight of stairs. Make sure you write down the time in seconds.

10 Post-Steps 8) Divide your answer from #5 by the time it took to climb the stairs (#7). Do the same for #6. Include units!

11 Calories from one serving of this caramel apple? Convert to minutes.
Post-Steps 9) Based on your answer from #6, how much time (in seconds) would it take for you personally to burn the Calories from one serving of this caramel apple? Convert to minutes. 10) How many times would you have to climb the stairs?

12 Turn in Energy (Calorie) activity Don’t forget your name!
End of Class Turn in Energy (Calorie) activity Don’t forget your name! Extra Credit Homework Bring in an empty soda can
