1 Participial Phrases English 10

2 Definition The participial phrase includes the participle and the object of the participle or any words modified by or related to the participle.

3 PRESENT PARTICIPLE A present participle is a verb in the present tense, happening right now. The verb has an --ING ending.

4 Create a participial phrase
To create a present participial phrase, take an ING verb and START your sentence with it. Notice the placement of the comma (after the end of the introductory phrase).

5 IMPORTANT! Use a present participial phrase as a SENTENCE STARTER!!
This is called an “Introductory Phrase”.

6 For example: Running to the door, I tripped and fell.
Tapping the marker on the desk, Frank annoyed me. Feeling frustrated, Jill started to worry that she may not pass her Driver’s Ed test.

7 ALWAYS DO THE ELIMINATION CHECK!!!
In the elimination check, take out (or eliminate) the introductory phrase (the phrase at the beginning of the sentence BEFORE the comma) and check to see that the sentence is still complete. Does it still contain a subject and a verb?

8 For example: __________________, I tripped and fell.
______________________, Frank annoyed me. ______________, Jill started to worry that she may not pass her Driver’s Ed test.

9 Write your own present participial phrases!
