Classifications of Matter
2
Matter Has mass Takes up space ex…. Chemistry is the study of MATTER!
3
Physical means: a. Sorting b. Filtering c. Heating and cooling Each component keeps the same characteristics after separation
4
Mixtures Contain more than one kind of matter
Can be separated physically
5
Types of Mixtures Homogeneous mixtures – are the same throughout; every sample has the same ratio of ingredients Ex: Chocolate Ice Cream Heterogeneous Mixtures – vary throughout; each sample has the potential to have a different ratio from the next Ex: Chicken noodle soup
6
Mixture Examples Petroleum (Crude Oil) – 1,000,000 molecular compounds
Milk – Fat, Whey, Liquids Soda – Carbonated water, corn syrup, caramel color, phosphoric acid, natural flavors and caffeine Paint – Pigment, Latex, thinning agents
7
Substances Cannot be separated by physical means
May contain more than one kind of matter but can only be separated by chemical means
8
Types of Substances Elements – Contain only one kind of matter; specifically one kind of atom Compounds – contain two or more elements and cannot be separated without chemical means
9
Review Questions: Types of matter
What are the four main classifications of matter? Give two examples of each type of matter What are three ways to separate a mixture by physical means? What kind of substance is Iron?
