investing: Giving money with the expectation of receiving profit What is a stock or share? A small piece of a company that investors can buy Investors (you) buy shares of company: You own a part (share) of the company Companies use $$ to buy equipment, update technology, etc. If value of company increases, the investor makes money! If value of company decreases, the investor loses money.

You buy 1 share of Target stock today for $10.
Example: You buy 1 share of Target stock today for $10. Tomorrow, the value of Target stock increases to $15. 2 options: Sell your stock and make $5 in profit! Keep your stock and hope price keeps increasing.
