1 Projectile Motion Honors Physics

2 What is a projectile? A projectile is an object upon which the only force acting is gravity. There are a variety of examples of projectiles. An object dropped from rest is a projectile. An object that is thrown vertically upward is also a projectile. And an object which is thrown upward at an angle to the horizontal is also a projectile.

3 Types of Projectile motion
DROPPED THROWN STRAIGH UP THROWN AT AN ANGLE

4 What is a projectile? Lets Read Article!
A projectile is any object that once projected or dropped continues in motion by its own inertia and is influenced only by the downward force of gravity. Lets Read Article!

5 What is a projectile? A projectile is any object that once projected or dropped continues in motion by its own inertia and is influenced only by the downward force of gravity.

6 What is a projectile? By definition, a projectile has a single force that acts upon it - the force of gravity. If there were any other force acting upon an object, then that object would not be a projectile.

7 What is a projectile? Regardless of whether a projectile is moving downwards, upwards, upwards and rightwards, or downwards and leftwards, the free-body diagram of the projectile is still as depicted in the diagram at the right. By definition, a projectile is any object upon which the only force is gravity.

8 Motion of a projectile The path a projectile takes is called its trajectory. A projectile’s trajectory is all, or part of, a parabola.

9 Motion of a projectile The vertical motion of a projectile is denoted with a lower case y. The horizontal motion of a projectile is denoted with a lower case x.

10 Motion of a projectile The vertical acceleration is ay and vertical velocity is vy. The horizontal acceleration is ax and horizontal velocity is vx.

11 Summary Horizontal Motion Vertical Motion Force? No
Yes: the force of gravity pulling down (weight) Acceleration? None Yes: -9.8 m/s/s Velocity? Constant: whatever the initial velocity is. Changing by 9.8 m/s every second in the downward direction
