Chapter 2.2 Physical Science
Acceleration Chapter 2.2 Physical Science

Acceleration Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity. When the velocity of an object changes, the object is accelerating. Velocity includes speed and direction, so acceleration occurs when an object changes its speed, direction or both.

Acceleration If the acceleration is in the same direction as the velocity, the speed increases and the acceleration is positive. If the speed decreases, the acceleration is in the opposite direction from the velocity, and the acceleration is Negative.

Calculating Acceleration

Practice Problems You’re at a stop light and after the light turns green, you accelerate to a speed of 60 km/hr in a matter of 0.5 hours. What is your acceleration? You are travelling at 50 miles per hour and are approaching a red light. It takes you 0.1 hours to come to a complete stop. What is your acceleration?

Graphing acceleration
