Powers & Exponents Calculators OK! Chapter 1.2 – Lesson
I can evaluate expressions that include exponents. I can write exponential expressions to solve real-life problems. 6.NS.2
3
Vocabulary Power: A product of repeated factors. Powers always include an exponent. Example: 32 is a power, 3 × 2 is not. Can you tell the difference? Circle the powers in each expression. B) C)
4
Vocabulary Base: The base is the repeated factor (the number being multiplied over and over). Example: Draw a BOX around the base of each power. A) B) C) D)
5
Vocabulary Exponent: The exponent tells you how many times the base is being used as a factor. It is written as a superscript to the right of the base. Example: Draw an ARROW pointing to the exponent of each power. A) B) C)
6
Write each Product as a Power:
B) Because 4 is used as a factor 6 times, 4 is the base and its exponent is 6. Because 12 is used as a factor 3 times, 12 is the base and its exponent is 3.

Step 1) write each power as repeated multiplication Step 2) multiply
Expanded Form of a Power: A way of writing a power to make it easier to solve. Step 1) write each power as repeated multiplication Step 2) multiply Example: Expand the following powers then solve. A) B) C)

Vocabulary Perfect Square: The square of a whole number is a Perfect Square. (i.e. If a number times itself equals the given number, then it is a Perfect Square) Example: Determine whether it is a perfect square. If it is, then write it as a power. B) C) YES! NO! YES!
