1 The Fungus Among Us Chapter 21

2 21-1 The Kingdom Fungi 1. Fungi: Kingdom Fungi
Eukaryotes (nuclei in their cells) Heterotrophs (cannot make their own food) Have cell walls Multicellular and unicellular Kingdom Fungi

3 The Kingdom Fungi 2. Fungi are heterotrophs
Get their food by digesting outside body Then they absorb it Insert hyphae in food Ooze out digestive enzymes Enzymes break down food Then absorb

4 Kingdom Fungi 3. Except for yeast, all fungi are multicellular.
Yeast are only unicellular fungus

5 Kingdom Fungi 4. Hyphae: Thin filaments that make up fungus
5. The bodies of multicellular fungi are composed of many hyphae tangled together into a thick mass called a mycelium.

6 Kingdom Fungi 6. Fruiting Body: reproductive structure growing from the mycelium in the soil beneath it.

7 Kingdom Fungi Parts of a fungi

8 Parts of a mushroom continued…

9 Kingdom Fungi 8. Fairy Ring: People once thought that fairies dancing in circles during a warm night produces these mushroom rings that appeared the next morning.

10 Kingdom Fungi 9. Fungi can reproduce asexually in two ways:
When cells or hyphae break off and bring to grow on their own Produce spores that scatter and grow on their own

11 Kingdom Fungi 10. Fungal spores are found in almost every environment.
11. In order for spores to germinate (grow), they must land in an area with the proper combination of temperature, moisture and food.

12 Spores are spread to new locations by: Wind
Kingdom Fungi Spores are spread to new locations by: Wind Animals and other organisms
