Industrial leader in petrol, steel, chemicals, electronics, food processing, etc.
7% land area of world and 5% of world population
Free enterprise: private individuals own most of the resources, technology and business and operate for profit with little control of the government
Leader in petroleum, steel, transportation equipment, chemicals, electronics, food processing, telecommunications, consumer goods, lumber, and mining

4. Now a postindustrial society
USA starts to provide services instead of products
Postindustrial economy- system where manufacturing no longer plays a dominant role
Service related jobs include processing, finance, medicine, transportation and education

5. Creating a Diverse Society
Population over 280 million
Most common languages are English and Spanish
Over 1,000 different religions practiced in America-- 85% practice Christianity
Influential arts: Native American pottery/weavings, skyscrapers, Hollywood movies, African-American music (jazz, blues, gospel, & rock-n-roll), Southern music (bluegrass & country)
