509 B.C. – Roman Republic Begins 1215 A.D. – Magna Carta 1689 – English Bill of Rights 1763 – English defeat France in French and Indian War 1774 – 1st Continental Congress 1775 – 2nd Continental Congress 1776 – Adoption of Declaration of Independence 1781 – Articles of Confederation ratified

3 Magna Carta Adopted in 1215, long before colonies were founded
Enacted by English nobles to challenge the kings (royal) power Known as the Great Charter Documented rights that the king could not take away – included right to fair trial Only applied to nobles First look at natural rights

4 English Bill of Rights Magna Carta limited power of king
Representative government followed with the creation of Parliament 1689, English Bill of rights passed Listed the rights of all English citizens, not just nobles, all people must obey the laws

5 English Defeat France French and Indian War or Seven Year War
The king of England (King George III) Large war debts came from protection of the colonies King created taxes in the colonies to gain revenue to pay debts Timeline:

6 Payment for War British sent troops and resources (money, weapons) to help secure the colonies from French rule Needed money to pay for the war, decided to tax the colonists because it was on their home soil. Outrage because up to this point, colonists were allowed to make their own government and laws

Taxes & Laws enforced on American Colonies by British government Stamp Act (1765): tax on official documents Quartering Act (1765): law forcing colonist to house soldiers in their home Tea Act of 1773: tax on all tea and tea products Intolerable Acts: closing all Boston harbor to all trade Writs of Assistance: government officials give power to search and seize colonial property without due cause

9 1st & 2nd Continental Congress
Delegates from 12 colonies met in Philadelphia Hoped to convince English government to respect colonists’ rights Pledged to cut off all trade with England Decided to meet in one year if situation didn’t improve – Second Continental Congress

10 Declaration Decision to officially separate from England
Main Idea of Declaration came from John Adams Written by Thomas Jefferson Declaration announced in 1776 the creation of a new nation and division of England Begins the road to Revolutionary War, known as a Civil War in England

11 Articles of Confederation
Followed the view of alliance of independent states Created in 1777, gave power to each individual state Could not tax or enforce any laws Ratified in 1781, with all 13 states approval
