aka: The Seven Years War
French & Indian War aka: The Seven Years War
2
Rivals for an Empire -Background
-Both France & England wanted Ohio River Valley -Colonists wanted England since they were already British subjects
3
-New France -France had all of Mississippi River Valley -Mostly fur traders & priests wanting to convert Natives -No desire to build towns & start families (unlike the British) -Friendlier with Natives than the British -More military alliances with Natives than British
4
War (1754-1763) -Early French Victories
-French build fort near modern day Pittsburgh -English had already given land to merchants -George Washington leads group to push French out -French overpower Washington and force him to surrender -French get help from Natives -Use hit & run tactics the British are unfamiliar with
5
-William Pitt -British king rearranges government and assigns William Pitt to work with the military -Convinces the Iroquois to align themselves with the British -Now there is an equal balance between French and English, both getting help from the natives
6
-Final Battle -English win the war with a surprise attack on Quebec -War officially over in 1763 -Treaty of Paris -British get all land East of Mississippi River -Spanish get all land West of Mississippi River -Real losers were the Natives -British harder to bargain with than the French
7
-New problems with Natives
-Lots of fighting between Natives and British in Ohio River Valley -Natives capture 8 forts -British send smallpox infested blankets to Natives as “peace” offering -many die of the disease and are unable to fight the British -Proclamation of 1763 -Says no settlement for colonists past Appalachian Mt. -Difficult to enforce
8
Colonies and Britain Grow Apart
-New Policies -More British troops to control the Natives -makes colonists nervous they will turn on them as well -1764 Sugar Act -Taxes on certain imports -Lower tax on foreign-made molasses -hoping colonists would pay less instead of smuggling in -Enforcement of laws increased -Smugglers now tried in a stricter court and not by their lenient peers
