Literary Terms Motivation (pg. 697) – refers to the reasons for a character’s behavior. Can come from internal sources or external factors. Inference – educated guess based on facts presented in the text and on your own life experience

The Great Gatsby “Winter Dream” (in your textbook) was seen by Fitzgerald as a sort of first draft of the Gatsby idea. Both Dexter (“Winter Dreams”) and Gatsby fall in love with beautiful but shallow women. Both acquire great fortunes Gatsby never escapes from his desire for Daisy. His inability to see Daisy’s selfishness contributes to his downfall.
