2. Great Railroad 1877
Cause: PA RR began cutting wages, other RR cut wages. Some protest but most work for less
What Happened: strikers blocked trains, seized control of rail switches, set fires
Reaction: paralyzed nations commerce, 60,000 militia in ten states, national guard called in
Result: +100 died, continued labor conflict, blame foreigners

3. Haymarket 1886 Cause: demonstrate for 8 hr day, violence with police
What happened: bomb goes off, gunfire exchanged between workers and police
Reaction: 8 men with “foreign” sounding names indicted of murder & conspiracy
Result: all found guilty, 4 hanged, 1 committed suicide, 3 pardoned, anti immigration feelings

4. Pullman Strike, 1894
Causes: layoff & pay cuts, refuse to reduce rents in company town
What happened: May 11, 1894 – 90% go on strike. Spreads nationwide with help of American Railway Union
Reaction: Courts order workers back, sends in 14,000 federal troops
Results: 25 killed, Socialist party est by Eugene Debs.
