Between 1870 and 1920, 20 million immigrants came into the country. They came from Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, Italy, Austro-Hungary, etc. Push Factors Religious persecution Russian Massacre of Jews Loss of farms due to crop loss (Potato Famine) Pull Factors Friends or family who were already here. American factories sent recruiting agents. Railroads posted advertisements for land.

Between 1880 and 1920 about 260,000 immigrants from the West Indies arrived. Many came from Jamaica, Cuba, and Puerto Rico. Many Mexican immigrants entered the country as well

The Journey- could only afford cheap fares. often stuffed below the deck of a boat with 2,000 other people. Safety and hygiene were low, and contaminated water killed many European immigrants landed on Ellis Island, and those from the West landed at Angel Island. Many people were detained for days while undergoing inspections Culture shock- the confusion, anxiety language, customs, jobs, etc..

Anti Immigrant feelings- American workers resented immigrants because they were cheap labor.
The Chinese came over to work the railroads, but when they were through, the doors to other jobs were shut elsewhere. Chinese Exclusion Act- banned entry to the country for all Chinese except students, teachers, merchants, tourists and government officials.
