1
Potential and Kinetic Energy in the real world.
Roller Coasters Potential and Kinetic Energy in the real world.
2
Energy Energy: the ability to do work
Work: the use of force to move an object. Depends on the amount of force and the distance the object traveled The formula for work is W = F x D.
3
Energy Transformation
Law of Conservation of Energy: energy cannot be created nor destroyed It must transform into another type of energy!
4
Potential Energy Stored energy; energy an object has because of its position (height) or condition (mass)
5
Examples of Potential Energy
Gasoline in a vehicle gas tank Nutrients in food
6
Kinetic Energy Energy an object has because of its motion.
Depends on mass and speed.
7
Examples of Kinetic Energy
Coaster full of people = more mass = greater KE than empty coaster High coaster drop = greater speed and total energy
8
Mechanical Energy the sum of kinetic and potential energy
Examples: --waterfall --sound waves --wind --moving cars
9
Draw and Label the coaster!
F- potential energy G- half potential and half kinetic H- all kinetic K- half potential and half kinetic
