1 Biography vs. Autobiography

2 We will be looking at two readings.
They are both very similar, but they are both different as well. Be on the look out for the difference. (Note it!!!)

3 How are the two readings alike and how are they different?

4 Reading 1 Aunt Cindy was a big part of Jane’s childhood. Jane and her parents visited Aunt Cindy at least once a month. She remembers many visits to Aunt Cindy’s tiny, dark apartment. It was very quiet in that building– maybe because tenants were not allowed to have children or pets. In spite of that, Aunt Cindy found a way to express her love for animals; she spent days working at an animal shelter near her home, and scouting out alleyways for strays and finding them homes.

Shows that the writer knows a lot about this person. Describes the person’s environment. Shows how the person affects other people. States or implies how the writer feels about the person. Written in the third person point of view.

10 Generic Structure Orientation
It given the reader the background information. The opening paragraph should answer the questions: who, what, where, when, and how. Series of Event It presents a series of events, usually told in chronological order. Reorientation Conclusion with a comment on the contributions this person has made. Summary and evaluation of the person’s achievement.

11 Language Features A biographical recount uses specific names of the people involved in the biography. It is mainly written in simple past tense (the final paragraph could also include the present tense). A biographical recount describes events, so it uses many verb or action verb.

13 Who I am in Life My name is Sally Friday. I started school when I was six-years-old. I went to kindergarten through fifth grade at Booker Elementary and while I was there, I won an award for perfect attendance. I also won an award for honor roll all four terms. Then I attended Booker Middle School, and there I also won a couple of awards: one for perfect attendance and two for being named Student of the Year--one in sixth grade and the other in eighth grade. I am now a senior at Booker High School. I plan on finishing school and maybe going to a community college.

15 Amelia Earhart Earhart was born on July 24, 1897, in Atchison, Kansas. She was the elder of Edwin Stanton and Amy Otis Earhart's two daughters. During the war Amelia worked as a military nurse in Canada and later she became a social worker and taught English to immigrant children. One day she took a 10-minute plane ride and knew what her vocation would be - she would learn to fly. In 1928, Amelia received a call from Captain Hilton H Railey to join pilots Wilmer Stultz and Louis Gordon on a flight from the United States to England. Though Amelia was just a passenger, she became the first woman to cross the Atlantic. The plane they flew in was 'The Friendship' and the trip was made on June 17-18, A publisher named George Putnam wrote an article on the flight and in 1931, Amelia married him.
