Linear Motion
2
So lots of moving is happening
Everything Moves You are moving right now! Our planet turn on its axis Our planet moves around the sun Our solar system moves around our galaxy Our galaxy moves around the universe! So lots of moving is happening
3
But What Are We Talking About?
Motion is relative – we describe it in relation to something else Unless stated otherwise, when we discuss the speeds of things in our environment, we mean relative to the surface of the earth Moving
4
What is Speed? How would you define speed?
A measure of the distance an object travels per unit of time What do you think the formula for speed is – knowing the definition?
5
Units of Speed
6
Increase Decrease Speeding Up!
So, knowing the formula for speed, what would we need to do for distance and what for time to speed up? Increase Decrease
7
Constant Speed vs. Changing Speed
8
Constant Speed The rate of change of position in which the same distance is traveled each second
9
Instantaneous Speed If the speed of an object is changing, it might be helpful to know the object’s speed at a specific moment Instantaneous speed- speed at a specific instant in time
10
Think! How would the distance the car travels each second change if it were slowing down?
11
Average Speed The total distance traveled divided by the total time taken to travel that distance
12
Math You Can Do! d = 360m T = 4s What is your average speed?
Average Speed = 360m/4s 90 m/s
13
Guess What? Average speed is actually velocity! You already know velocity!
14
Vocabulary So Far Speed Constant Speed Instantaneous Speed
Average Speed
