Question 24

Question 24 This table shows the horsepower and top speed of 12 cars.
Top Speed (mph) 165 122 245 148 150 117 140 114 90 109 103 112 49 96 180 133 70 105 130 115 62 98 145 120 The students can use a calculator for this one What the students are trying to do is to plot the points and find the line of best fit. In the line of best fit, the students need to find the slope and the y-intercept of the line that goes through their data. Each slide discusses each part and what to do to solve it.

Question 24 Part A and B Construct a scatter plot of the data in the table on the graph below. Draw a line of best fit Here, the students just needed to construct a scatter plot by graphing the points given. Their graphs should look fairly similar to this one. Then, they need to draw a line of best fit. A line of best fit is a line that “fits” the data, meaning it goes through the majority of the points. It does not need to across through all the points, nor does it need to go through the first and last point. It just needs to get through the majority of it. Their line should look something like the one drawn above. Though it does not go through the data, it gives a general trend of the happenings of the graph.

Question 24 Part C Based on the graph you drew, how much more horsepower is needed to increase the top speed of a car by 5 miles per hour? It increases by 10 In order for the students to get this question correct, they need to find the slope of the line that they drew. What is probably going to confuse them is that it states it wants the increase in 5 miles per hour. If they look at their line, however, they can see that the y-axis goes up by 5s. They can follow the line and take their best guess. It should around 20 because the line will go up by one and over by 20, since the increments go up by 10.
