At Least One Child Under the Age of 18
Question 40 Part A Use the results of the survey to complete this table: At Least One Pet At Least One Child Under the Age of 18 Yes No For this problem, you need to count how many people on the table fall into the categories. For example, I started with the section that talked about children under the age of 18. If they said yes to that, I also looked at the number of pets they had. If they had both yes’, then they would fall under the first box, which happens to be 9 people. You do that for the rest of the table to figure out how many total people fit into the categories. 9 6 2 8

Question 40 Part B Jacob made a conjecture that there is a possible association between whether an adult has at least one child under the age of 18 and whether the adult has at least one pet. State whether the results of the survey provide evidence that adults who have at least one child under the age of 18 also tend to have at least one pet. Explain your answer.

Question 40 Part B Yes, there is evidence that the adults who have at least one child under the age of 18 also tend to have at least one pet. I found the relative frequencies for whether the adult had at least one pet or not given that the adult had at least one child and then given that the adults did not have any children, and 82% of the adults who had at least one child also had at least one pet. What the students need to do for this one is find the total amount surveryed for each category and then divide to get frequencies. Since we are looking at children under 18 first, we will be adding down those columns. First, it is will be 9 + 2, which gives us 11. You then divide the number of people that have both a pet and someone under 18 by 11, and you get 82%. For those that are under 18 without a pet, it’s 2/11, which is 18%. It’s safe to assume, based on this data, that the majority of people with children under 18 also have a pet.
