Energy Movement Engineering
2
Engineering People who design products are called engineers.
Engineers often design things to make existing designs work better or cost less. Designing involves thinking, imagining, trying things out, using materials wisely, and communicating plans.
3
Energy and Work Energy is the ability to do work.
Engineers who study movement use “work” to mean the amount of force needed to move a mass from one place to another or to change it in some way. Doing work requires energy.
4
Kinetic and Potential Energy
Kinetic energy is energy of motion. Objects with kinetic energy can do work. Example: Swinging a hammer to move a nail. Potential energy is the energy of position. A stretched rubber band.
5
Energy Transfer When objects collide energy is transferred
A collision happens when one object hits another
6
Momentum Momentum is the quantity of motion and object has
Momentum depends on mass and velocity
7
Friction Friction is a force that opposes motion between two surfaces that are touching. Rougher surfaces create more friction. Greater force creates more friction. Friction can be lessened with the use of lubricants.
