1 Steps of the Scientific Method

2 Experimental Design Using the scientific method
The scientific method is a way to answer questions and solve problems. All true experimental investigations must have: 1 independent variable Dependent variables Constants and/or controls

3 4. Test with an Experiment 5. Collect and Analyze Results
Scientific Method 1. Ask A Question 2. Background Research 3. Form a Hypothesis 4. Test with an Experiment 5. Collect and Analyze Results 6. Report Conclusions

4 Steps of the Scientific Method
1. Question: Develop a question or problem that can be solved through experimentation.

5 Steps of the Scientific Method
2. Research: Make observations and research your topic of interest.

6 Steps of the Scientific Method
3. Formulate a Hypothesis: A possible explanation or answer to a question.

7 Big Bang - Hypothesis

8 Writing a Hypothesis A Hypothesis should be written as an: If/then Statement Example: If soil temperatures rise, then plant growth will increase. I “think” or “I believe” should not be used in a hypothesis

9 Steps of the Scientific Method
4. Experiment: A controlled test that allows you to explore possible answers to a problem.

10 Variable Any factor that can be controlled, changed, or measured in an experiment.

11 Independent Variable The independent, or manipulated variable, is a factor that’s intentionally changed by the experimenter.

12 Dependent Variable The dependent, or responding variable, is the factor that may change as a result of changes made in the independent variable.

14 Controls/Constants The control or constant in an experiment is all the factors that the experimenter attempts to keep the same.

15 Steps of the Scientific Method
5. Analyze Results: Measure and record the information you get from your procedure. These are sometimes called observations or results. Record your information carefully in a Data table. Display your information on a graph.

16 Graphing Results D = Dependent R = Responding Y = Y Axis
The Mnemonic DRY MIX is used to help you know where to graph your experimental results D = Dependent R = Responding Y = Y Axis M = Manipulated I = Independent X = X Axis

17 Steps of the Scientific Method
5. Conclusion: Include a statement that accepts or rejects the hypothesis. Make recommendations for further study and possible improvements to the procedure.
