3 Arranged Marriage Arranged marriage is when someone, usually parents, choose or arrange who their child marries at a young age, possibly right at birth It is not uncommon for families in high societies to arrange marriage for their children. Families with equal social statuses usually are married Most children marry between the ages of 3 and 15, and if they resist, they are most likely abused It can force people into a miserable union, but as they get older, men can accept multiple wives More than 16% of Afghan children are married before they’re fifteen, and some scenarios lead to suicide Arranged marriage can provide protection and security, but it forces children to start their life too early

5 Burqas A burqa is outerwear or a cloak that covers the entire body that is worn by Muslim women, they originated from Arabic they wear them so the don’t attract themselves to men and as a sign of modesty and humility Girls and young unmarried women are not required to wear a burqa, but after they get married their husband decides if they have to wear it or not Men don’t have to wear them because they don’t need to protect themselves from women

7 Afghan Tradition One of the most popular traditions in Afghanistan is dancing the national dance is called Attan Attan has many props such as scarves and skirts Has many fast moving motions Many people shaking and twirling Many colorful costumes The main ethnic groups are Pashtun and Tajik The Pashtun people are very warlike with a turbulent past The Tajik people speak Persian and are very tradition oriented

9 Climate and Geography Afghanistan has 4 seasons; a very wet spring, scorching summers, dry falls, and very snowy winters Highest temperature ever recorded: degrees Fahrenheit Lowest temerature ever recorded: degrees Fahrenheit Afghanistan has many mountain ranges and bodies of water formed from melting snow The biggest mountain is Noshaq Some bodies of water are the Gomal River and the Kushk River Surrounding countries are Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, China, Pakistan, and Iran It snows around mountain peeks all year , and deep snow in the winter Devastating disasters include earthquakes, floods, droughts, landslides, and avalanches Evergreen trees, oak, poplar, hazelnuts, almonds, and pistachios all grow in Afghanistan
