1 Unit 4.4 – 4.5 Reading and Video Assignment
Rather than receiving information through a lecture, you will be acquiring knowledge through text, images and video. Take your time, re-read/re-watch things if you have to. Follow all directions. There will be a quiz over this material on Monday/Tuesday. Make sure you understand the concepts.

2 Directions Fill out your Unit 04 Note Outline by reading sections 4.4 and 4.5 On a separate piece of paper answer the “check your recall questions.” Write out the question and answer in complete sentences. There are 7 questions Turn in your Recall Questions

3 Directions C6H12O6 + 6O2 6CO2 + 6 H2O + 36 ATP + Heat
Write down and know the general formula for cellular respiration. C6H12O6 + 6O CO2 + 6 H2O + 36 ATP + Heat Cellular Respiration Oxygen Carbon Dioxide Stored Energy Molecules Heat Glucose/Sugar Cellular Respiration Water (Food that we eat) (Inhale) (Exhale) (Exhale) (Used by body) (Used by body)

4 Directions We keep talking about oxidation. Look at this image and see if you can figure out what oxidation is. Write it in your notes.

5 Directions Write out the questions and answer them in complete sentences. What must happen to our food before cellular respiration can begin? When a glucose molecules is oxidized, what is released? What does Glycolysis mean? What are the two phases of Glycolysis? What happens during the energy investment phase? How many steps are there in Glycolysis? What are the three outputs created at the end of the energy harvest phase of glycolysis? What is NADH carrying? If oxygen is present, where will the Pyruvate and NADH go? These questions can be found between 0:00 – 2:15

6 Directions: Continue watching the video
Directions: Continue watching the video. Write out the questions and answer them in complete sentences. These questions can be found between 2:16 -3:55 What is pyruvate converted into? What two things does this process create? What do the carbons hydrogens and oxygens of pyruvate ultimately end up as? What makes the Citric Acid Cycle/Kreb’s cycle a cycle? How many times does the cycle repeat for one glucose molecule? If 1 glucose molecule is the input, what is the output of the Kreb’s cycle (there are 4 outputs) Based on your knowledge of the Cellular Respiration Formula, where do you think the CO2 goes after the Kreb’s cycle? What molecules go onto the Electron Transport Chain?

7 Directions: Continue watching the video
Directions: Continue watching the video. Write out the questions and answer them in complete sentences. What is the electron transport chain? Who delivers the electrons to the electron transport chain (2 molecules) What does the movement of electrons through the electron transport chain cause? Energy is used to move hydrogen ions against their concentration gradient. What type of transport would this be considered? The hydrogen ions, following the principle of diffusion, flow back into the matrix through what protein? What is created? What does oxygen act as? When oxygen accepts two electrons (and two hydrogen ions) what is created? What is the net ATP created at the end of the Electron Transport Chain? What is the goal of cellular respiration? These questions can be found between 3:55 – 6:01

8 Directions Turn in your answered video questions.
At the end of the period you should have turned in: Check for recall questions Video questions If you did not finish the assignment in class, then it is homework and needs to be completed at home. If you finish early: study the material, work on missing assignments, work on something for another class.
